This article describes research on pupils’ beliefs, interests and attitudes with regard to (applications of) ionizing radiation in society. This research was done before and after the unit "Ionizing Radiation" had been used. The unit is part of the PLON curriculum, an innovative Dutch curriculum for general secondary education in physics. The subjects radio-activity and ionizing radiation are treated within the framework of the problem of the acceptability of these kinds of radiation in medicine, energy-supply and defence. The unit appears to link well with existing interests of pupils; following the unit pupils have less irrational fear of radiation. Especially, there is a more tolerant attitude to lesser known applications of ionizing radiation, e.g. food conservation. The research also shows up misconceptions that pupils have before and after the unit.
