Een didactische structuur van kookpuntbegrippen. Een voorbeeld van onderzoek naar begripsontwikkeling

In this article an example is given of a way to describe a process of conceptual development by analyzing protocols from discussion between students and teachers. From these protocols it appeared that first year chemistry students interpreted the concept of ‘boiling point’ in different ways. Some of these interpretations differed from usual interpretation found in chemistry textbooks. We present a part of laboratory course aiming at encouriging students to ask questions about the nature of the boiling point concept. Conceptual development – interpreted as productivity in discussion – is apparent in one of the protocols. A tentative educational structure is presented, including several boiling point concepts and different kinds of apparatus to measure boiling points. We expect such an educational structure to be an important source of new teaching material. The possible role of Van Hiele-levels in further developing this structure is discussed.
