Decision-making is often mentioned as an important feature of teaching science in a technological and social context. Much has been written about both the desirability, expected learning outcomes and possible blueprints of decision-making, being part of science education. However, there is much less literature concerning the actual realisation and actual learning outcomes of decision-making. Nevertheless, in view of the existing confusion of ideas, there is a great need for research on this subject. In the Dutch project on environmental education NME-VO science-teaching-materials have been developed within an environmental context. Decision-making on environmental issues is a characteristic of the teaching units. Research has been done on the students’ prior understanding, preconceptions and beliefs and on the learning-effects afterwards in relation to the environmental issues on which the units focus. This paper outlines some results of the research on the issue ‘Fuel’ from the perspective of decision-making.
